Each year the golf courses in the Valley of the Sun – including We-Ko-Pa – undergo what is called “overseeding” to ensure a lush green playing surface throughout the winter and spring.
During the process, which we usually schedule for October of each year, a cool-season Ryegrass is overseeded on top of the summer Bermudagrass. Once cool weather causes the Bermudagrass to go dormant for the winter, the Ryegrass grows in its place.
With two courses to overseed, we do our best to stagger the closures over the 25-day overseeding window so that we are open for all but the 10 days in which the courses are closed simultaneously.
Conditions just after the golf courses reopen can be a bit wet due to the heavier-than-normal irrigation required to help the new ryegrass take root. As a result, golf carts must remain on the cart paths during the critical early stages of the grow-in.
The end result of overseeding is that golfers are treated to a new, rich and lush green blanket of winter Ryegrass. And, who doesn’t like that? Golfers also benefit from the cooler fall temperatures and attractive shoulder-season golf and lodging rates during this time of transition.
