Some golf honors are determined by architects, course raters and industry experts. Others come from the people who make tee times, play the courses and decide which experiences are worth recommending to someone else.

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club recently received that kind of recognition when readers of Experience AZ magazine named it among the Best Golf Courses in Arizona. Thousands of votes were submitted by Arizona residents, travelers and adventure seekers as part of the publication’s Readers’ Choice Awards, celebrating the destinations and experiences that best represent the state.

In a golf market as deep and competitive as Arizona, earning the support of those voters means a great deal to us.

Arizona golfers have choices. They know what excellent course conditions look like. They recognize thoughtful design, genuine hospitality and the small operational details that can separate a memorable day from an ordinary round. When those golfers include We-Ko-Pa among the state’s best, the recognition reflects much more than a beautiful photograph or one spectacular hole.

It reflects the complete experience.

Two Courses, Two Different Rounds

That experience begins with Saguaro and Cholla, two courses that offer distinctly different ways to play golf.

Saguaro rewards strategy, patience and creative shotmaking. Its broad playing corridors give golfers room from the tee, but the strongest positions must still be earned. Angles matter. Contours matter. Golfers who understand how the ball moves along the ground can use the course’s slopes to their advantage, while players who simply aim toward the center often discover that the next shot requires more thought than expected.

Cholla presents a different kind of test. Dramatic elevation changes, bold carries and striking desert features create a round built around confidence and execution. The course regularly asks golfers to commit to a line, trust the yardage and embrace the visual challenge in front of them.

Together, the two courses give golfers a reason to return. Someone can play Saguaro one day and Cholla the next without feeling like they have played two versions of the same course. Each produces its own decisions, memorable shots and post-round conversations.

Consistency Is Built Every Morning

Course conditions also play a major role in the experience voters are recognizing.

Awards may be announced once a year, but the work behind them happens every morning. We-Ko-Pa’s maintenance team manages two courses through extreme summer heat, seasonal turf transitions, changing weather and the heavy demand of Arizona’s busiest golf months.

That work begins long before the first tee time. Irrigation must be carefully managed. Greens, fairways and playing surfaces must be prepared with an understanding of how they will respond throughout the day. Mowing schedules, moisture levels and course setup all require hundreds of small decisions that most golfers will never see.

Golfers still recognize the results.

They feel them in the consistency of the greens, the quality of the lies and the way the course plays from the opening tee shot through the final putt. Those conditions do not happen by accident, and maintaining them across two very different golf courses requires a daily commitment from the entire agronomy team.

More Than the Golf Course

A memorable round is also shaped by everything surrounding the golf.

It begins with the welcome when a golfer arrives. It continues through the golf shop, practice facilities, first tee, on-course service and the pace and flow of the round. It carries into the conversations afterward, when players begin replaying their best shots and debating the ones they would like to try again.

“We are incredibly honored to be recognized by Experience AZ readers because it reflects how golfers feel about the entire day they spend with us,” said Eric Dettman, head golf professional at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club. “Saguaro and Cholla are obviously at the center of that experience, but this recognition also belongs to the people who prepare the courses, welcome our guests and work behind the scenes to make each round memorable.”

The Sonoran Desert setting remains an important part of that experience. The mountains, native vegetation and expansive views give We-Ko-Pa an unmistakable sense of place. The setting gets golfers’ attention, but the quality of the golf and the way they are treated are what bring them back.

Recognition Earned One Round at a Time

Readers’ choice awards are especially meaningful because they are built through personal experience.

Voters are choosing the courses they remember, return to and tell their friends to play. They are responding to the full day, including all the details that turn a tee time into something worth recommending.

That makes this recognition less of a finish line and more of a responsibility.

Every round is another opportunity to live up to the expectations that come with being named among Arizona’s best. Every returning golfer is a reminder that consistency matters. Every first-time visitor is a chance to create another We-Ko-Pa story.

To everyone who voted, visited, returned or recommended We-Ko-Pa to another golfer, thank you. We are proud of the recognition, grateful for the support and ready to earn it all over again with the next round.
