As the summer heat finally breaks in the Valley of the Sun, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club’s overseeding marks the arrival of cooler days and the start of Arizona’s spectacular golf season. After a particularly intense summer, the fresh, green ryegrass across the Cholla and Saguaro courses is a welcome sight for golfers ready to tee off in ideal conditions. Overseeding isn’t just maintenance here – it’s a transformation that ensures the same unbelievable conditions our guests expect from Arizona’s Ultimate Golf Experience.
During October, We-Ko-Pa’s dedicated team scalped back dormant Bermuda grass and seeded ryegrass, creating the lush fairways our guests anticipate each season. In Arizona’s desert climate, Bermuda grass naturally goes dormant as temperatures drop, leaving a brown, straw-like layer across the course. To counter this, We-Ko-Pa undergoes a labor-intensive process that includes scalping the dormant grass down to the soil before planting hardy ryegrass over it. Overseeding not only brings vivid greens back to the course but also helps We-Ko-Pa maintain its reputation for winter golf excellence in the Sonoran Desert.
The Reopening Experience: What to Expect on the Course
With the overseeding complete, golfers can now play on beautifully refreshed surfaces, though initial conditions may be a bit softer due to increased watering. Players might consider moving up a tee box during these weeks as roll distances adjust – just a suggestion, don’t fill up our comments. Cart path-only access is temporarily in place to protect these tender blades, but it’s a small trade-off for the quality of the experience.
A Perfect Time to Play
Following overseed, We-Ko-Pa’s course rates remain highly favorable through the early season, making this the perfect window for those who appreciate premium conditions at a great value. With moderate temperatures and spectacular course settings, it’s an ideal time for both locals and winter visitors to make the most of their rounds before peak-season rates take effect after the New Year.
A Sonoran Desert Gem
Each year, We-Ko-Pa’s overseeding effort enhances the club’s reputation as one of the finest winter golf destinations in the Sonoran Desert. By committing to this process, We-Ko-Pa ensures players from around the globe can enjoy a world-class experience set against the breathtaking desert landscape.
