For those in the know, or those who turn to the internet for a humorous take on the sporting world, Barstool Sports is one of the most recognizable new media brands around. Sure, it can be a little crass at times – on purpose – but new things are often viewed through a skeptical lens before making the turn towards mainstream. And while many experienced and wise golfers might not necessarily know the new sports brand on the block, what we learned after meeting ambassadors of the brand is twofold: Barstool Sports and their embrace of golf has helped tune in generation of young people to the game we all love and cherish. And two, the gentlemen in charge of Barstool’s golf coverage absolutely love We-Ko-Pa Golf Club in Fort McDowell, Arizona just outside Scottsdale.

How do we know? Harvard graduate and down-to-earth golf fanatic Riggs – co-host of Barstool’s Fore Play Podcast – is touring golf courses here in Scottsdale and, obviously, We-Ko-Pa was on his list. Riggs and his podcast buddies are ranking Scottsdale courses against a par-72 score, and to date and with only a few left to play including Saguaro’s sister course Cholla, We-Ko-Pa is the current clubhouse leader with a 6-under-par 66. Four of those and you’re likely winning a PGA TOUR event.

Here are a few things Riggs – Barstool Sports’ golf liaison – had to say about the Coore/Crenshaw design.

“It’s fantastic,” said Riggs. “You look at some of this footage and it is spectacular. Gorgeous views on every hole. Really good architecture. A good variety of golf holes – some short par-3s which I like and some long par-5s. I talk a lot about desert golf because it’s largely the same everywhere, and here, you have desert golf in that you’re in the desert, but you also have Coore Crenshaw design which is as good as it gets…We-Ko-Pa. That’s just fun to say.”
